REB Special Program to Train and Certify Preprimary and Primary Teachers in Rwanda Program Overview

Introduction 

• Education sector in Rwanda was challenged by overcrowded classes and long distances travelled by learners in pre-primary, primary and secondary education 
• The country decided to embark on construction of more than 22,000 classrooms across the country to curb the above mentioned issues
• Increment on number of schools and classrooms generated a need for recruitment of many new teachers to fill the gap 
• More than 40,000 teachers were recruited including nearly 25,000 uncertified teachers including more pre-primary, primary and secondary school  teachers.
• REB is planning to train all uncertified teachers in teaching competences 

Training Plan

Uncertified Teachers

• There are ~24,000 primary and pre-primary teachers to be trained and certified

Training Dates and Days

• Training will be conducted on weekends and holidays in two waves:
• Wave 1: March-August, 2024 (12,000 teachers/400 per district)
• Wave 2: August-Dec, 2024 (12,000 teachers/400 per district)

• In each wave, a total of 600 Teacher Trainers will be required to train 12,000 teachers

• Cohort A: 200 already prepared in January
• Cohort B: 200 being trained now in January-February
• Cohort C: 200 will be trained in February

Training Sites

• Training will take place in one training site per district (REB to finalize locations)

• Criteria for training site:
  • Day school
  • Centrally located and accessible for teachers
  • Location to purchase snacks nearby
  • Has 10 rooms with tables and chairs able to accommodate 40 teachers, 2 trainers each
  • Has electricity and strong, consistent internet connection
  • Has functional and hygienic restroom facilities for teachers

• Each training site will have 10 rooms
  • 1 REB training coordinator/focal point per site
  • 2 trainers per room
  • 40 teachers per room
