How to Apply for a National ID as a Diaspora

This service allows Rwandans living abroad to apply for a national ID and acquire a National Population Registry (NPR) number in the process. A national ID is a document that officially identifies an adult as a citizen of Rwanda whereas an NPR number identifies any Rwandan in the NPR. After receiving the NPR number notification, the applicant pays for the service and is required to provide their biometric data at the designated Rwandan embassy. The applicant will receive a notification containing their national ID number and will receive the national ID card later. The service is provided by the National Identification Agency (NIDA).

The processing time is 30 days and its price is Rwf 500.

Prerequisites:

  • No Irembo account is required to apply for this service.
  • Applicants should be 16 years and above.
  • Attachments required are a passport photo, copy of identification document, civil status document, and other documents.
  • Applicants should be living abroad.

Follow these simple steps to apply for a national ID as a diaspora:

1. Visit www.irembo.gov.rw and under Identification, click on Application of National ID.

2. Select which service you want; Application for a National ID for diaspora applicants without an NPR number and click Apply

3. Enter the required Applicant Details

5. Click on Next to proceed.

6. Verify that the information is true, enter a phone number and/or email address, check the verification box, and click on Submit.

NOTE: After applying successfully via IremboGov, the application is sent to the embassy and the DGIE office for approval. Upon approval, it is sent to NIDA to produce the NPR number, which is sent to the applicant via email. Applicant receives another notification with a billing ID (99….) for payment. Applicants can pay online using VISA or MasterCard.

After paying for the national ID, the applicant receives a notification informing them when to take biometric tests at the embassy, and they will be advised on the next steps.
